Originated by Leo’s Dancewear at the 1992 Jazz Dance World Congress and sponsored by Leo’s Dancewear at every Congress since then, this event recognizes outstanding Jazz Dance Choreographers.

Deadline for entries was March 2, 2009.

The choreography of all Finalists will be performed during the Jazz Dance World Congress, July 22-26, 2009 , at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Chicago’s Millennium Park, where a distinguished jury will choose the winners of the three Leo awards.

Choreographers will compete for:
GOLD LEO AWARD and $2,500
plus winner will perform in the final Gala Performance
SILVER LEO AWARD and $1,000
BRONZE LEO AWARD and $500

All Finalists will perform in the 1500-seat Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Chicago's Millennium Park.

All entries must be jazz, including lyrical jazz, African jazz, musical comedy jazz, classic jazz, contemporary jazz, and jazz tap, or any combination of these jazz styles. Choreography will be evaluated on creativity and imagination and of effectively combining movement vocabulary (steps and style), time/rhythm/musical quality, use of space, staging and performance.

Length of entry is not to exceed 7 minutes. Only group works with 6 or more dancers are eligible.

ALL DANCERS (MINIMUM AGE 13) MUST BE REGISTERED FOR JDWC 2009.
Choreographer and dancers may be professional, amateur, or a combination. Work may be entered by the choreographer or by a dance group that has hired the choreographer to set the work. Works will be presented with general stage lighting with no sets. All performance music must be on CD.
